Case study / Technical community leadership

GCE · GitHub Campus Expert

From student community leadership to builder experiences.

My GitHub Campus Expert journey shaped how I approach technical communities: understand what learners need, create useful experiences and give people a reason to keep building. CodeWave Hub and HackPrix are two parts of that journey.

01 / The challenge

The starting point

Technical communities need more than a calendar of events. Learners need accessible entry points, practical guidance and opportunities to contribute, take ownership and continue.

02 / The approach

How the experience connects

A community model that turns first encounters with technology into continued participation.

Featured experience

CodeWave Hub

A student-led space for technical learning and collaboration.

As founder / lead associated with CodeWave Hub, I helped create workshops, technical sessions, open-source activities and opportunities for student leadership. Hacktoberfest on 18–19 October 2023 brought 250+ participants into practical learning around repositories, web development and contribution workflows.

Featured experience

HackPrix

Taking the community journey into a builder-focused experience.

HackPrix is part of the progression from learning and connecting to collaborating on ideas, building under constraints and sharing work. It sits alongside CodeWave Hub within this Campus Expert story as a space focused on making and showcasing.

03 / Work done

From intent to execution

Community design

Applied Campus Expert training to understand community needs, create accessible workshops and focus on continuity and impact.

Developer education

Explained Git and GitHub, contribution workflows and open-source practices through hands-on activities and technical communication.

Student ownership

Created opportunities for members to organize, speak, mentor and take responsibility for community experiences.

04 / Impact

What the work enabled

Community infrastructure

Student-led spaces supported repeated learning, organizing and collaboration.

Open-source exposure

Hacktoberfest introduced contribution as a practical developer skill.

A foundation for later work

Workshop design, communication and community experience informed LSA, HackUnion and OpenBuild Week.

05 / Reflection

What I took forward

Community gives learning somewhere to go. A workshop becomes more valuable when it leads to a contribution, a project or the next opportunity to build.
